The Key to Highly Efficient Operation of Hydraulic Cylinders

Hydraulic systems are present in nearly every field of modern agriculture and industry from construction and mining to assembly lines. One of the fundamental components of hydraulic equipment is the hydraulic cylinder, which converts hydraulic pressure into physical motion.

At MPH, we offer a wide range of hydraulic cylinder types, allowing you to find the ideal model for various systems and applications. If you are unsure about your selection, our expert team is ready to assist you with helpful advice and detailed information.

The Operating Principle of Hydraulic Cylinders

A hydraulic cylinder is a device that creates linear motion using fluid pressure. Its operation is based on Pascal’s law, which states that pressure applied in a closed system acts equally in all directions. The pressure of the hydraulic oil inside the system is exerted on the cylinder's piston, causing it to move.

A hydraulic cylinder consists of two main parts: the cylinder barrel and the piston rod moving within it. Hydraulic fluid is directed to one side of the piston, applying pressure to its surface and moving the rod either forward or backward. The direction and speed of movement are controlled by valves and other regulators within the system. While the principle is relatively simple, it allows for the generation of exceptionally high force with precise control.

Different Types of Hydraulic Cylinders – Tipping Cylinder

Hydraulic cylinders vary in design and type depending on the task they need to perform. Two commonly used and functionally distinct types are the tipping (single-acting) cylinder and the double-acting cylinder. While the former is primarily used in agricultural and truck applications, the latter is designed for precise, controlled movements in industrial machinery.

A tipping cylinder is a single-acting hydraulic cylinder, making it ideal for applications where movement is only required in one direction, and retraction relies on an external force such as gravity. A classic example is the tipper truck bed, which is pushed upward by the cylinder and then lowers back into position due to its weight and gravity. These cylinders are known for their rugged construction, designed for high force output.

Their simple design means they require minimal and easy maintenance, making them ideal for outdoor use in harsh working environments. There are also telescopic versions, which offer a longer stroke while maintaining a compact installation size.

Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinder

Double-acting hydraulic cylinders have a more complex structure and are designed for scenarios where movement is required in both directions with active hydraulic force. In the 50 mm cylinder available in our product range, the piston moves both forward and backward with precise hydraulic control. This type is typically used in industrial machinery, automated systems, lifting equipment, and press machines.

These cylinders can be built to operate in either symmetrical or asymmetrical configurations, depending on whether the piston has the same effective surface area on both sides.

Using the appropriate cylinder type ensures long-term reliability and efficient operation. If you have any further questions about our products, feel free to contact us through any of our available communication channels.
