When you want to power an auxiliary device with a vehicle, you can either use an external drive (such as an electric motor or an internal combustion engine) or the vehicle’s own engine through the gearbox. In the latter case, a shaft connection must be created between the appropriate gearbox shaft and the hydraulic pump or cardan flange this connection is ensured by the Power Take-Off (PTO). A PTO can be an external unit (for example, driven by an auxiliary belt pulley mounted on the crankshaft, sometimes with an electrically operated clutch), or it can be integrated directly into the gearbox. At MPH Kft., we supply both types of PTOs for almost all gearbox types, primarily from Bezares and OMFB. For applications requiring higher torque and performance, only gearbox-mounted PTOs are suitable, while belt-driven PTOs are better for smaller vehicles, such as tail lifts or light tippers.

PTO Components and Installation

PTOs can be installed at the mounting points provided by the gearbox manufacturer on the side, rear, front, or even at multiple positions. In most cases, a gear or splined shaft connection is available, which can be connected via a PTO housing. European hydraulic pumps typically use ISO (4-bolt, 8-spline) or UNI (3-bolt, 6-spline) connections. In some cases, adapters can make systems compatible, but modifications to cardan flanges often require specialist workshops. Incorrect installation or the absence of proper sealing can cause serious damage, which is why it is always recommended to seek the assistance of MPH Kft. experts when choosing the right PTO.

PTO Operation and Maintenance

The PTO is engaged from the driver’s cab, using either an electro-pneumatic or pneumatic control valve. In tipping systems, the PTO switch is often integrated with the tipping valve, which can automatically disengage the drive during lowering. In certain applications (e.g., silo unloading compressors), a separate joystick is recommended. Lubrication is supplied from the gearbox, and depending on the PTO type, sealing may be provided by an internal shaft seal or by the hydraulic pump’s own shaft seal. If the seal is damaged due to overload, hydraulic oil may mix with the gearbox oil, causing severe damage. At MPH Kft., we only supply reliable, tested PTOs that guarantee long-term safe operation.

Operating gearbox-mounted PTOs while driving is generally prohibited, as it can overload the gearbox. Exceptions are made for certain special vehicles (such as concrete mixers or municipal service vehicles), where Flywheel PTOs or split shaft units are required. For modern, computer-controlled vehicles, reprogramming or parameterization of the onboard control system is mandatory, which can only be performed at authorized service centers.

PTO Gear Ratios and Performance

PTOs can be direct drive or geared, with speed increases usually limited to a maximum of 2:1. The final output ratio is the product of both the gearbox and PTO ratios, and this must always be considered when designing the drive for a hydraulic pump or cardan shaft.
