The minimum bend radius must also not be overlooked. A hose routed with too tight a bend can suffer structural damage, leading to cracks or premature failure. Proper routing design and correct length selection can result in significant long-term maintenance cost savings.

The primary consideration is the type of conveyed medium: mineral oil, biodegradable hydraulic fluid, water-based media, or special chemical substances. The hose’s inner layer must be compatible with the given fluid; otherwise, the material may age prematurely or become damaged.
Environmental effects must also be taken into account. For outdoor use, UV radiation, ozone, moisture, or extreme temperatures should be considered. In industrial environments, mechanical stress, abrasion, or chemical exposure are common. In such cases, hoses with special covers or reinforced designs are recommended.
